PeepSo – myCRED Integration Plugin

PeepSo is getting more attention from third party developers. With the release of PeepSo 1.7.0 we added a great 3rd party integration plugin to our store.

PeepSo – myCRED Integration Plugin

myCRED awards users points for actions performed on your website. The PeepSo – myCRED Integration Plugin adds a bunch of new hooks for PeepSo-related actions. The plugin was created by a third party developer but we’re supporting it so if you run into any issues, you can still open a support ticket with us.

The list of hooks includes the following actions:

myCRED Integration - Hooks

  • New PeepSo Post
  • PeepSo Post Deletion
  • New PeepSo Message
  • PeepSo Message Deletion
  • New PeepSo Comment

  • PeepSo Friend Deletion
  • Add New PeepSo Stream Photo
  • Deleting PeepSo Stream Photo

PeepSo 1.6.3 Is Out!

In the previous release we totally redid the notifications in PeepSo. We also did the Photo Albums, and those changes made us all very, very happy. So happy, in fact, that we decided to make more of them. In this release, we’ve brought a giant bag of brand-new and shiny!

All-New Notifications System

Just when you thought notifications couldn’t get better… we find a way! Not only are notifications more compact now but they also do more. Sure, they’ll take you to the view of the post, but if the notification is about a comment or a Like on a Comment, the page will also scroll to the comment itself. We’ll even flash a highlight there so that you just can’t miss it. See it in action:

Styling Improvements

Photo Albums are a great way to share photos and keep them organized but we wanted them to look even better. Nailed it! Here’s how they look now.

Revamped Photo Albums view.

Registration Fields

Ever since we redesigned the profile fields in PeepSo and added the Extended Profiles plugin to our portfolio, we thought we should also include those extra fields on registration. It’s done.

There’s now a simple switch next to the fields in the Profiles configuration options. Check the switch and the field will appear on the registration form.

Profiles Settings - marked switch on separator and field for showing it in registration.

Profiles Settings – marked switch on separator and field for showing it in registration.

All the rules and settings are still kept and applied. So if you make a field compulsory on the profile, it will be compulsory on registration. All validation rules are applied too.

Frontned User Registration - clearly visible validation notices.

Other Improvements

File System Directory

Our support staff are often asked about an inability to upload photos. It could be a profile avatar or any photo on the stream but the solution is almost always the same: to make sure that the file system directory is writable.

To reduce those incidents, we’ve added a check that runs in the background when you visit the WP Dashboard or any other admin page. It will tell you if there is a problem with the file directory.

Nested Comments

Nested comments now follow the same rule as regular comments. If you set the number of comments to display to 3, for example, then both regular and nested comments will show the last three comments.

Comments will now always be visible, you won’t have to click “view replies” to see what was said, and you’ll never miss a reply on a nested comment.

Email Field In User Profile

We’ve added an email field to users’ profiles on the front end, enabling users to change their email addresses right from their profiles. The field and the workflow are dependent on WordPress behavior so all relevant email notifications about the change are sent out appropriately.

PeepSo 1.6.2 Is Out!

PeepSo 1.6.2 introduces another series of great features, improvements and bugfixes. Yeah, we’re on a roll here 🙂 Let’s start with the Core itself. There’s been a ton of changes.

PeepSo Core

Pinned Posts

Pinning a post to the top of the activity stream is a great way to send a clear message to everyone who visits. Just pick a post you’d like to pin to the top of the stream, and click the little arrow. It’s pinned!

Want to unpin it? Just click the little arrow again. It’s unpinned! You can only pin one post at a time, so if you pin a second post, the first one will return to its rightful place in the stream.

Bear in mind that privacy settings still apply to pinned posts. If you pin a post with a restricted privacy setting, it might not show to all users. (Don’t worry, we’ll let you know if you’re pinning a restricted post.)

Pinned post set with a limited privacy setting.

Pinned post set with a limited privacy setting.

Nested Comments

Most post comments are pretty clear but sometimes discussions can break off into two, three or more conversations. They can be hard to follow. Nested comments are one solution but creating a new column for every reply could have been even more confusing.

We’ve decided to use +1 level nested comments. Click ‘Reply’ and users will be able to comment on a comment, and keep different conversations separate.

Nested Comments.

Nested Comments.

If you’ve installed TagSo, one of our three free plugins for PeepSo, when a user hits Reply, the person they’re replying to is automatically mentioned. Everyone knows exactly who the comment was addressed to.

Revamped Notifications

Notifications are the heartbeat of every community. They addict users and drive them back to the community. Whenever users see that red number they have to click. We wrote a fascinating blog post about it.

We have great notifications in PeepSo but we wanted to make them even greater. We wanted them to just work. Always.

Previous notifications were divided into a series of links, each of which had to be clicked. Now it doesn’t matter where you click. Whether you hit the avatar, the shown links, or even a bit of empty space somewhere, you’ll always be taken directly to the content you’re being notified about.

Admin Account Verification Setting

Some admins have told us that they didn’t know what the “Enable Account Verification” setting meant. We had created a brief description but it looks like it wasn’t clear enough. We’ve made it better.

Admin Account Verification setting.

If there are any configuration options that you wonder about, that aren’t clear or you find confusing, do let us know. We’ll get it fixed! Just open a support ticket here.

Extensions Page

We felt that the list of plugins on the PeepSo dashboard looked a little cluttered. We’ve now decided to create a completely separate view. It not only works better, with options like hiding the plugins already installed, it offers an elegant search option as well.

The Extensions page is where you can find all the additional PeepSo plugins, both the official plugins created by our team and those created by third party developers, paid and free. As PeepSo grows you’ll notice new additions to the list.

Extensions Page

PicSo

PeepSo 1.6.0 put three in-built Photo Albums in users’ profiles. Those albums were just the beginning of something we’ve wanted to do for a long time: Custom Photo Albums.

Now users can create their own albums.

Users can share photos of a special event. Group the pictures from their vacation. Create new albums, edit existing albums, add and remove photos, change captions, and more.

Whenever an album is created, a post on the activity stream is published automatically with the same privacy setting as the album. If the user adds more photos to the album, the post is updated and bumped to the top of the stream.

Photo Albums in Profile view.

All comments are also synced with the album view so users see uniform content.

Other Features and Improvements

Revamped Stream Action Titles

It’s obvious when someone shares a post so we decided to cut it out completely. Less is more, right?

MoodSo and LocSo, our other two completely free PeepSo plugins, are no longer attached to the end of each post. They now render in an environment that’s much more natural.

Moods and Location now render in a more natural place.

Moods and Location now render in a more natural place.

We’ve also moved them around in the Messages and Chat views.

Location pin

You might have noticed that there’s no preposition next to the location. There were too many options and too many exceptions. So we went with a pin instead. It’s so much easier… and much more elegant.

Upgrade PeepSo Now

Automatic updates let you move quickly to the latest version—and you can do it all in the backend of your site.

PeepSo Email Digest Plugin Is Out!

PeepSo Email Digest Brings members back to your site

The PeepSo Email Digest is the latest addition to our family of plugins for PeepSo Core. It’s intended to bring users back to the community and to build engagement through enticing content delivered by email. Because it only sends those emails to users who haven’t logged in during a period specified by the admin, it won’t bother active members; it will only show inactive members what they’ve been missing.

The plugin automatically sends those members a summary of the most engaging posts in the community, the posts with the most likes and largest number of comments. Admins can define the duration of the users’ inactivity and set the number of posts to include in the digest.

Here's how the email digest looks like with images activated

Here’s how the email digest looks like with images activated

The Email

An Email Digest with all settings enabled contains the following:

Most Liked Post

The post that has won the largest number of likes over a set period.

Most Commented Post

The post that has won the largest number of comments over a set period.

Other Popular Posts

Other popular posts made by the community.

All links in posts shown in the Email Digest email connect to that particular activity view.

How The Email Digest Ranks Posts

In PeepSo 1.6.0 we quietly introduced Activity Ranking. It takes four basic actions a user might do with a post and awards points on the following basis:

  • 1 comment = 100
  • 1 like = 50
  • 1 share = 20
  • 1 view = 1

So a post with 5 comments, 3 likes and 1 share would earn 670 ranking points. Points for views are only assigned when someone sees a post in a single activity view.

It took long discussion and plenty of trial and error to figure out the scoring method. We wanted first to reward engagement that prompts a user to contribute to a post’s conversation. We decided that ‘like’ was the next most important reaction, followed by sharing and views.

In the future, we plan to use the Activity Ranking for other calculations but for now, it’s only being used to generate the Email Digest.

Email Digest Includes Plugin Content

As you can see from the screenshot above, Email Digests can display the text of posts, usernames and avatars. It’s also capable of displaying the content of other PeepSo plugins.

  • PicSo – supplies a picture attached to a post.
  • VidSo – supplies a thumbnail of the video shared in a post.
  • MoodSo – supplies the name of the mood shared in a post.
  • LocSo – supplies the location shared in a post.
  • TagSo – supplies the name of the person tagged in a post.

Privacy

Privacy is always crucial to us. We’ve just spent the last two weeks testing the Digest in every possible way. We wanted to make sure that the plugin only considers those posts that have either a Public OR a Site Members privacy setting.

The plugin ignores the ranking of any posts with a privacy setting of either Friends Only or Only Me.

Configuration

Admins can choose a number of settings for the plugin. They’re all very clear and we’ve placed explanations under any that might need more explaining.

PeepSo Email Digest Configuration.

PeepSo Email Digest Configuration.

How often should the Email Digest emails be sent

Email Digests can be published on a daily or weekly basis. Because no one enjoys the sense of being spammed, we recommend setting the frequency to “Weekly.” Users who were inactive for a set number of days will receive a useful summary of what they missed over the previous week.

Execute Email Digest email creation via cron job

We’ve found that sometimes the default WP cron job just didn’t cut it. So we created a setting to allow admins to create a server-side cron job and set it to run at a frequency of their choice. Server cron jobs are much more reliable. They don’t depend on users visiting your site and they are always executed on time.

How many emails should be created in a batch

Depending on the number of users in your community—and the number of inactive users—you might need to create hundreds of emails. The batch setting prevents your server overloading. Emails are passed to the PeepSo Mailqueue which ensures they’re sent at the set time.

Use images in emails

Our research and experience has taught us that the more images you use in emails, the more likely your emails will be marked as spam. You can read more about spam triggers in MailChimp’s post here.

PeepSo Email Digest Email without images.

PeepSo Email Digest Email without images.

Easy Opt-Outs

In addition to the unsubscribe link included in the footer of every email, users can also opt out of the Email Digest in their Profile Preferences.

Limitations

Please check with your hosting provider to find the number of emails you can send from your site in a day. Most, if not all, shared hosts place a limit. Email Digests may add significantly to other emails, including registration confirmations and notifications, sent from your site.

PeepSo PMP Integration Plugin Is Out!

We’ve just released another great plugin! A very welcomed addition to our PeepSo family.

This plugin integrates the PaidMembershipsPro plugin into PeepSo’s registration and navigation, giving users a seamless registration experience. On registration, members are offered a list of membership plans. The plans are configurable via PMP plugin’s settings. Just as membership pages are.

Once members have chosen their plan, they can complete their registration and confirm their email address. They’re logged in.

Admin can also choose to display a link to the PMP membership page as a sub-menu of the profile menu on the PeepSo toolbar.

The plugin’s settings can be found in WordPress Admin > PeepSo > Config > Additional Options tab.

By creating membership levels with PMP, admins can also control user access to the community.

At WordPress > Pages, find the pages that contain PeepSo Shortcodes.

Set the desired access level on all pages containing PeepSo Shortcodes except for the ‘Activity’, ‘Registration’ and ‘Password Recovery’ pages.

You can also hide the activity stream from non-logged in users in PeepSo, keeping your community totally private.

The focus of the plugin is on seamless navigation and a smooth registration experience for users. Registration and membership selection is now one easy step.

PeepSo 1.6.0 Is Out!

This is a huge milestone for PeepSo. The new version is packed with many of the features our customers have been asking for. It’s a massive step up. I encourage you to update PeepSo today to enjoy all these great enhancements.

First though, a special thanks to our Beta testers for helping us making version 1.6.0 stable. We couldn’t have done it without you.

So… What’s New?

Core PeepSo Changes

Flexible Core Profile Fields

PeepSo Core comes with the following core fields:

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Gender
  • Birthdate
  • About Me
  • Website

These fields used to be hard-coded. You couldn’t change them without digging into the code and breaking things. Not any more. Now admins can enable or disable the fields, change their titles or labels, and determine whether or not they’re required. They can set validation and even add a ‘placeholder’ or prompt to encourage users to complete the fields. We also have a brand new plugin that allows you to add new profile fields. Read about ProfileSo here.

Core PeepSo Customizable Profile Fields

Core PeepSo Customizable Profile Fields

Profile Completion Progress Bar

The Profile Completion Progress Bar shows users how much of their profiles they have already completed and what they still need to add.

That’s useful to members but we’ve made it even more useful for community admins: you can ‘Force Profile Completion’ upon your users. If any required fields in their profiles are empty, they’ll have to fill them in before they can navigate anywhere in PeepSo beyond their profile view.

Profile Completeness Progress Bar

Profile Completeness Progress Bar

Changes To Edit Account Page

The ‘Edit Account’ page is now a ‘Preferences’ page. Not only did we merge general account settings and notification settings but it’s all completely Ajaxified. There’s no ‘Save’ button anywhere in this view. It’s not necessary… and we love it that way!

Members Can Now Hide From Search Results

Users now have the option to hide their profiles from user listings. They won’t show up in search results, on members pages, on friends’ lists, or on widgets, etc. They can still make their content visible if they wish, though, giving them complete control over their privacy. And admins can still see everyone. The setting is available for them in their profile Preferences.

Users Get A Sin Bin

It’s never fun having to ban a user but sometimes it is necessary… at least until they’ve calmed down, at which point the admin can let them back in. We’ve now made that process much easier with bans limited by time. The next time a user starts flaming, admins can decide in advance how long they’ll be cooling off in the sin bin.

Filters Now Above The Stream

We made a number of changes to the activity stream. The first thing that you’ll notice are the tabs above the stream. We felt that the setting in the user preferences to show either the community feed or friends feed wasn’t super user-friendly. So we put the tabs right on top of the stream. For those tabs to show, you will need to have the Friends plugin installed and activated.

Filters above Activity Stream

Filters above Activity Stream

Removing Link Previews

Users can now remove the link preview when they place a link in a post or a comment. Admins, of course, can remove the preview from all posts and comments.

Number Of Hidden Comments Now Visible

We added a bit more information to the hidden comments. Now we don’t just tell users that additional comments have been hidden. We tell them exactly how many comments have been hidden.

Facebook’s Open Graph Improvements

Open Graph Admin Config

Open Graph Admin Config

PeepSo handles Open Graph in a completely new way. This is a big change! After offering no control at all over Open Graph in the previous version, PeepSo now has settings that let admins set the default image, title and description.

That’s a big improvement but we’re working with Facebook, so it’s not as straightforward as we might like.

Open Graph handling has been designed to be fully aware of context, shared links and privacy. So if someone posts a picture, adds a description, mood and location, but sets any privacy setting on the post to not ‘Private,’ when a link to that activity is shared on Facebook, Facebook will only fetch the defaults added in the Open Graph handling settings.

If the post has a ‘Public’ setting, Facebook behaves very differently. It will share the added picture as the Open Graph image, take the title from defaults, and take the description from the post together with the mood and location name. Sharing a link to a user’s public profile will fetch their cover and avatar as the Open Graph image.

That sounds complicated but privacy was our priority and we made sure it works exactly as it should.

We made a number of other new features and improvements to PeepSo Core. For the full list of changes, see the changelog.

Widgets

PeepSo 1.6.0 is packed with improvements to current widgets and introduces a bunch of completely new ones.

‘Hide When Empty’ Setting

If a widget is empty, the admin can decide not to show it, removing empty space on a Web page.

In my next blog post, I’ll tell you about the improvements to existing widgets, and describe the new widgets, what they do and how you can use them to create a more engaging community.

Improvements To Existing PeepSo Widgets

PeepSo Profile Widget

The PeepSo Profile widget has been around for a while. It allows members easy access to different PeepSo pages. In this update, we’ve added two new features:

Notification Placement

Notifications now appear on top of the widget so that even if your members are currently on other pages of your site, reading a blog or checking the terms, they won’t miss the notification.

Profile Completion

The degree of profile completion now also appears on this widget, encouraging members to continue adding information to their profile.

Those are all the Core PeepSo improvements. Next, I’ll tell you about an exciting new PeepSo plugin: ProfileSo.

Upgrade PeepSo Now

Automatic updates let you move quickly to the latest version—and you can do it all in the backend of your site.

Date

Add a date field and your users can tell people when they graduated, married…or bought their gleaming Harley. The date can appear in three different formats:

  • Relative time passed
  • Relative time passed – age

Email

Now you can ask users to enter their email addresses. The field has an option that automatically turns the address into a clickable link.

Single Select

Create a list for users to select a single option. You can really have fun with these fields: star sign, favorite color, football team, car model… you name it. Pick a topic that suits your community.

Multi Select

Create a list for users to select multiple options. They could enter the star signs they’d like to date, their favorite color combinations, the players on their fantasy football team, or every car they’ve ever driven. Create a list that suits your community.

Text

The text field lets users enter their own information. Simple and basic for you but valuable for your members.

URL

The URL field is designed to ask users for any URLs they might want to share, such as Twitter, Facebook or their own website. The field has validation options.

Separator

The separator is a parafield that acts as an organizational tool. You’ll be able to organize fields into more meaningful chunks such as Personal Information, Education, and Work Experience.

PeepSo 1.6.0 Plugin Improvements

PeepSo 1.6.0 comes packed with new features and improvements. In my previous blog posts I told you about the PeepSo core improvements, the new ProfileSo plugin and about the six new widgets that make your community even more engaging.

In this post I’ll tell you about the improvements and new features that we’ve added to some of our existing plugins and about upcoming new plugins.

PicSo

Photo Albums

We’d been toying with the idea of adding Albums to PeepSo and I’m glad to say that the first stage of that operation is behind us. If you’ve already upgraded to PeepSo 1.6.0, you’ve already been enjoying them. With this release we’ve redone the photos page in user profiles and added Core Albums.

Those albums are:

  • Stream Photos
  • Profile Pictures
  • Profile Covers

While Stream Photos aren’t new, the Profile Pictures and Profile Covers are all-new and shiny. If a user wants to change an avatar or profile cover, the albums let them review every avatar and profile cover they’ve ever added. It’s a nice history.

Core Photo Albums in PicSo

Each album also has its own navigation so that members can browse all the photos in an album without having to close the modal window.

We’re still working on custom created albums. It’s a big topic so look out for it in a future release.

Set A Profile Avatar Or Cover Photo From Photo View

We added ‘Options’ in modals when members view their own photos. Right from that modal, they can set an image as either their profile avatar or their profile cover.

Set Cover / Avatar from photo view.

Show New Avatar And Cover Photos On Stream

Another new setting lets admins generate a post on the community stream when a user changes their avatar or profile cover. It’s a nice touch that turns an image change into a community event. Their friends can Like and Comment on the picture.

Stream posts about Profile Cover and Avatar change.

Adding Photos To Comments

And with this version, users can also add a photo to a comment! The photos are assigned to the person who added them and they only appear in the comments, not in user profiles or photos or any of the photo-related widgets.

Messages and Chat

Read Status On Messages

Ever wondered whether someone read the message that you sent to their inbox or in Chat? We’ve got you covered! This feature lets users add ‘Send Read Receipt’ notifications to conversations. Users can choose not to send those read receipts if they’d prefer not to.

Upcoming New Plugins

PeepSo – PMP Integration

A lot of people have asked for an integration with PeepSo and I am happy to say that we are almost ready to release this integration plugin. Look out for it soon.

PeepSo Email Digest

The PeepSo Email Digest uses the most engaging content to bring people back to your community. It sends them an email with the latest and most popular posts on your community.

6 New Widgets in PeepSo 1.6.0

In my last blog post I introduced PeepSo 1.6.0, explained all the core enhancements and new features… and mentioned that we also have some new and much-needed widgets.

They’re very cool!

Widgets – Increase Community Engagement

The six new widgets make your community more dynamic and engaging. You can start using them as soon as you upgrade PeepSo and all its plugins to the latest version. You can find them on the WordPress admin widgets page (Appearance -> Widgets).

Friends’ Birthdays

Everybody wants to feel special on their birthday! This new PeepSo widget allows your members to see who has a birthday today, and whose birthday is coming up tomorrow or in the following days.

If members want to keep their birthday a secret, they can choose to hide their special day by choosing “Only Me” on the privacy settings.

Friends' Birthdays Widget and its configuration options.

Friends’ Birthdays Widget and its configuration options.

Mutual Friends

Seeing the friends that a member has in common with other friends helps them to form small gangs of their own. They can chat among themselves, swap stories and arrange to meet in real life. Admins can put this widget in any position on the site but we found that it works best in the ‘PeepSo’ widget position.
