PeepSo 1.6.0 Is Out!

This is a huge milestone for PeepSo. The new version is packed with many of the features our customers have been asking for. It’s a massive step up. I encourage you to update PeepSo today to enjoy all these great enhancements.

First though, a special thanks to our Beta testers for helping us making version 1.6.0 stable. We couldn’t have done it without you.

So… What’s New?

Core PeepSo Changes

Flexible Core Profile Fields

PeepSo Core comes with the following core fields:

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Gender
  • Birthdate
  • About Me
  • Website

These fields used to be hard-coded. You couldn’t change them without digging into the code and breaking things. Not any more. Now admins can enable or disable the fields, change their titles or labels, and determine whether or not they’re required. They can set validation and even add a ‘placeholder’ or prompt to encourage users to complete the fields. We also have a brand new plugin that allows you to add new profile fields. Read about ProfileSo here.

Core PeepSo Customizable Profile Fields

Core PeepSo Customizable Profile Fields

Profile Completion Progress Bar

The Profile Completion Progress Bar shows users how much of their profiles they have already completed and what they still need to add.

That’s useful to members but we’ve made it even more useful for community admins: you can ‘Force Profile Completion’ upon your users. If any required fields in their profiles are empty, they’ll have to fill them in before they can navigate anywhere in PeepSo beyond their profile view.

Profile Completeness Progress Bar

Profile Completeness Progress Bar

Changes To Edit Account Page

The ‘Edit Account’ page is now a ‘Preferences’ page. Not only did we merge general account settings and notification settings but it’s all completely Ajaxified. There’s no ‘Save’ button anywhere in this view. It’s not necessary… and we love it that way!

Members Can Now Hide From Search Results

Users now have the option to hide their profiles from user listings. They won’t show up in search results, on members pages, on friends’ lists, or on widgets, etc. They can still make their content visible if they wish, though, giving them complete control over their privacy. And admins can still see everyone. The setting is available for them in their profile Preferences.

Users Get A Sin Bin

It’s never fun having to ban a user but sometimes it is necessary… at least until they’ve calmed down, at which point the admin can let them back in. We’ve now made that process much easier with bans limited by time. The next time a user starts flaming, admins can decide in advance how long they’ll be cooling off in the sin bin.

Filters Now Above The Stream

We made a number of changes to the activity stream. The first thing that you’ll notice are the tabs above the stream. We felt that the setting in the user preferences to show either the community feed or friends feed wasn’t super user-friendly. So we put the tabs right on top of the stream. For those tabs to show, you will need to have the Friends plugin installed and activated.

Filters above Activity Stream

Removing Link Previews

Users can now remove the link preview when they place a link in a post or a comment. Admins, of course, can remove the preview from all posts and comments.

Number Of Hidden Comments Now Visible

We added a bit more information to the hidden comments. Now we don’t just tell users that additional comments have been hidden. We tell them exactly how many comments have been hidden.

Facebook’s Open Graph Improvements

Open Graph Admin Config

Open Graph Admin Config

PeepSo handles Open Graph in a completely new way. This is a big change! After offering no control at all over Open Graph in the previous version, PeepSo now has settings that let admins set the default image, title and description.

That’s a big improvement but we’re working with Facebook, so it’s not as straightforward as we might like.

Open Graph handling has been designed to be fully aware of context, shared links and privacy. So if someone posts a picture, adds a description, mood and location, but sets any privacy setting on the post to not ‘Private,’ when a link to that activity is shared on Facebook, Facebook will only fetch the defaults added in the Open Graph handling settings.

If the post has a ‘Public’ setting, Facebook behaves very differently. It will share the added picture as the Open Graph image, take the title from defaults, and take the description from the post together with the mood and location name. Sharing a link to a user’s public profile will fetch their cover and avatar as the Open Graph image.

That sounds complicated but privacy was our priority and we made sure it works exactly as it should.

We made a number of other new features and improvements to PeepSo Core. For the full list of changes, see the changelog.

Widgets

PeepSo 1.6.0 is packed with improvements to current widgets and introduces a bunch of completely new ones.

‘Hide When Empty’ Setting

If a widget is empty, the admin can decide not to show it, removing empty space on a Web page.

In my next blog post, I’ll tell you about the improvements to existing widgets, and describe the new widgets, what they do and how you can use them to create a more engaging community.

Improvements To Existing PeepSo Widgets

PeepSo Profile Widget

The PeepSo Profile widget has been around for a while. It allows members easy access to different PeepSo pages. In this update, we’ve added two new features:

Notification Placement

Notifications now appear on top of the widget so that even if your members are currently on other pages of your site, reading a blog or checking the terms, they won’t miss the notification.

Profile Completion

The degree of profile completion now also appears on this widget, encouraging members to continue adding information to their profile.

Those are all the Core PeepSo improvements. Next, I’ll tell you about an exciting new PeepSo plugin: ProfileSo.

Upgrade PeepSo Now

Automatic updates let you move quickly to the latest version—and you can do it all in the backend of your site.

Remember to update plugins in this sequence: ChatSo first, then all the child plugins. Core PeepSo plugin should be updated last. Here’s documentation that explains how to upgrade. You can see the full changelog here.

New Plugin – ProfileSo – Extended Profiles

extend profiles on peepso

ProfileSo is a brand new premium plugin that lets you add new profile fields to PeepSo. Once installed you’ll see a “New” button that will enable you to add any of the profile field types listed below:

  • Date
  • Email
  • Single Select
  • Multi Select
  • Text
  • URL
  • Separator

These fields should cover most of your needs but we plan to add new ones in future releases, such as location (country, state, city) and others.

Sample Fields Setup with ProfileSo

Date

Add a date field and your users can tell people when they graduated, married…or bought their gleaming Harley. The date can appear in three different formats:

  • WordPress date format
  • Relative time passed
  • Relative time passed – age

Email

Now you can ask users to enter their email addresses. The field has an option that automatically turns the address into a clickable link.

Single Select

Create a list for users to select a single option. You can really have fun with these fields: star sign, favorite color, football team, car model… you name it. Pick a topic that suits your community.

Multi Select

Create a list for users to select multiple options. They could enter the star signs they’d like to date, their favorite color combinations, the players on their fantasy football team, or every car they’ve ever driven. Create a list that suits your community.

Text

The text field lets users enter their own information. Simple and basic for you but valuable for your members.

URL

The URL field is designed to ask users for any URLs they might want to share, such as Twitter, Facebook or their own website. The field has validation options.

Separator

The separator is a parafield that acts as an organizational tool. You’ll be able to organize fields into more meaningful chunks such as Personal Information, Education, and Work Experience.

PeepSo 1.6.0 Plugin Improvements

PeepSo 1.6.0 comes packed with new features and improvements. In my previous blog posts I told you about the PeepSo core improvements, the new ProfileSo plugin and about the six new widgets that make your community even more engaging.

In this post I’ll tell you about the improvements and new features that we’ve added to some of our existing plugins and about upcoming new plugins.

PicSo

Photo Albums

We’d been toying with the idea of adding Albums to PeepSo and I’m glad to say that the first stage of that operation is behind us. If you’ve already upgraded to PeepSo 1.6.0, you’ve already been enjoying them. With this release we’ve redone the photos page in user profiles and added Core Albums.

Those albums are:

  • Stream Photos
  • Profile Pictures
  • Profile Covers

While Stream Photos aren’t new, the Profile Pictures and Profile Covers are all-new and shiny. If a user wants to change an avatar or profile cover, the albums let them review every avatar and profile cover they’ve ever added. It’s a nice history.

Core Photo Albums in PicSo

Each album also has its own navigation so that members can browse all the photos in an album without having to close the modal window.

We’re still working on custom created albums. It’s a big topic so look out for it in a future release.

Set A Profile Avatar Or Cover Photo From Photo View

We added ‘Options’ in modals when members view their own photos. Right from that modal, they can set an image as either their profile avatar or their profile cover.

Set Cover / Avatar from photo view.

Show New Avatar And Cover Photos On Stream

Another new setting lets admins generate a post on the community stream when a user changes their avatar or profile cover. It’s a nice touch that turns an image change into a community event. Their friends can Like and Comment on the picture.

Stream posts about Profile Cover and Avatar change.

Adding Photos To Comments

And with this version, users can also add a photo to a comment! The photos are assigned to the person who added them and they only appear in the comments, not in user profiles or photos or any of the photo-related widgets.

Messages and Chat

Read Status On Messages

Ever wondered whether someone read the message that you sent to their inbox or in Chat? We’ve got you covered! This feature lets users add ‘Send Read Receipt’ notifications to conversations. Users can choose not to send those read receipts if they’d prefer not to.

Upcoming New Plugins

PeepSo – PMP Integration

PMP (Paid Membership Pro) is a very popular membership plugin for WordPress. It lets you create membership levels and restrict pages to paying members. A lot of people have asked for an integration with PeepSo and I am happy to say that we are almost ready to release this integration plugin. Look out for it soon.

PeepSo Email Digest

The PeepSo Email Digest uses the most engaging content to bring people back to your community. It sends them an email with the latest and most popular posts on your community.

This plugin is almost ready. I’ll make a special announcement as soon as it’s released.

6 New Widgets in PeepSo 1.6.0

In my last blog post I introduced PeepSo 1.6.0, explained all the core enhancements and new features… and mentioned that we also have some new and much-needed widgets.

They’re very cool!

Widgets – Increase Community Engagement

The six new widgets make your community more dynamic and engaging. You can start using them as soon as you upgrade PeepSo and all its plugins to the latest version. You can find them on the WordPress admin widgets page (Appearance -> Widgets).

Friends’ Birthdays

Everybody wants to feel special on their birthday! This new PeepSo widget allows your members to see who has a birthday today, and whose birthday is coming up tomorrow or in the following days.

If members want to keep their birthday a secret, they can choose to hide their special day by choosing “Only Me” on the privacy settings.

Mutual Friends

Seeing the friends that a member has in common with other friends helps them to form small gangs of their own. They can chat among themselves, swap stories and arrange to meet in real life. Admins can put this widget in any position on the site but we found that it works best in the ‘PeepSo’ widget position.

Mutual Friends Widget, that's put in PeepSo widget position.

Latest Community Photos

This widget is a part of the PicSo plugin and shows the latest public photos uploaded by the community members.

Latest Community Videos

This widget is a part of the VidSo plugin and shows the latest public videos added by members.

Latest Members

This widget shows all the newly registered members. Old hands can give them a warm welcome, and visitors can see how active your community is… and jump right in.

Online Members

This widget shows a list of all members currently online. They’ll be able to drop each other a line and know they can get a response right away.

PeepSo 1.5.7 Is Out!

PeepSo 1.5.7 has been released and is now available for download.

It’s a minor compatibility release that ensures everything works well with the latest version of WordPress 4.5.

Unless there are any major issues, PeepSo 1.5.7 will be the last of the 1.5.x series. The next release will be 1.6.0 featuring Extended Profiles with brand-new customizable profile fields (Yay!)

We’re aiming to release a Beta version of PeepSo 1.6.0 early next week. Stay tuned.

PeepSo 1.5.6 Is Out!

PeepSo 1.5.6 is now available and ready for download.

PeepSo 1.5.6 is a minor release. We’re still working hard on version 1.6.0. It’s almost there so this will most likely be the last release of the 1.5.X series. Unless, something urgent comes up.

We currently have no reported bugs in PeepSo (yay!) so if you think you found a bug we missed, do let us know. We love getting rid of them!

This version introduces statistics and feedback gathering so that we can continue improving PeepSo. It’s an opt-in feature so if you don’t want to let us know how PeepSo is performing, that’s fine. It’s your choice and we want to be very clear about this.

If for some reason you don’t like PeepSo or can’t make it work the way you’d like, you can de-activate at any time. On deactivation, we’ll invite you to complete a feedback form that can help us to improve PeepSo. We really appreciate everyone’s feedback!

PeepSo 1.5.5 Is Out!

PeepSo 1.5.5 is now available and ready for download.

This is a great release. We know Christmas is a long way off but we’ve got a giant sackload of gifts for you in this version of PeepSo.

Third Party Plugins

PeepSo is starting to get some third party plugins. It’s a trickle at the moment but we’re expecting that trickle to develop into a river soon. To head off any confusion, we’ve made some changes to the list of your plugins. It’s a small change but it does make all of the official plugins stand out, and makes navigation easier.

List of PeepSo Core plugins.

Dashboard Reorganization

First, we reorganized the dashboard to make it more usable for admins. We’ve hidden the list of plugins for admins who already have them installed and activated, and for communities that verify members before adding them to the community, we’ve added a list of users pending approval. The dashboard also now has a list of reported items so that admins can deal with them quickly.

Mailqueue

Some websites have experienced issues with WordPress cron not executing in a timely manner either due to low traffic or a misconfiguration. So we’ve decided to create an endpoint for PeepSo mailqueue. It can now be executed on the server like a regular cronjob and you can be sure that emails will always go out without getting stuck in the mailqueue.

Gravatar support

Oh yes. As of version 1.5.5 PeepSo supports Gravatar avatars. You can allow your users to use gravatar or not. It’s all up to you. And for them it’s just one click away. I mean, really. One button.

PeepSo Gravatar Support

That all sounds great, doesn’t it? Here’s the big one…

PeepSo and WSL integration

WordPress Social Login in PeepSo.

WSL stands for WordPress Social Login. Starting from PeepSo 1.5.5 your users will be able to register and log in to your site using a range of different platforms, including:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Google+
  • Yahoo
  • Instagram
  • WindowsLive
  • Steam
  • And more

All you need to do is install and enable WSL.

We’ve also improved or fixed a bunch of other issues in this release. If users have not registered their names, the profile will now show their usernames, and we’ve cleaned up the wording in a few places to make the settings clearer to admins.

What’s Coming Up?

We’re getting closer to finishing Customizable Profile Fields. We are also looking for beta testers who would be interested in getting to know CPF, working with them and reporting any issues back. If you’re interested send me a message here. I’ll post a separate blogpost announcing the progress of the CPF later this week.

PeepSo 1.5.4 Is Out!

PeepSo 1.5.4 is a minor release, focusing on bug fixes and small improvements. We’ve enhanced tagging suggestions when marking conversation participants, and we boosted the performance of the tagging suggestions when they appear. We’ve also improved the way we handle Likes. The interface now changes immediately to give the user instant feedback while the message to the server to register the Like is sent in the background. That’s just a few things that changed in this version.

PeepSo 1.5.3 Is Out!

PeepSo 1.5.3 is now available. That’s great news… but there’s even better news.

We’ve decided to give away three of our premium plugins for free! Pretty cool, huh? Yea, we think so too! You can read more about it here.

PeepSo 1.5.3 is a minor release, focusing on bug fixes and small improvements. We’ve also improved the views in the backend on mobile devices so administrators can now manage their sites with even greater ease.

Other improvements include better alignment of some elements in specific browsers and chat handling on mobile devices. Also we improved how ‘likes’ are displayed. They’re more prominent now.

PeepSo 1.5.2 is out. A great start to the new year!

This is a minor release focusing on bug fixes and WordPress 4.4 compatibility. We really emphasized the code quality and testing during not only this update but all the previous ones, and when we checked PeepSo on WP 4.4 we found a slight misalignment of styles in the backend configuration options – that’s been fixed. Apart from this there were just a few minor bugs. It’s all good now.

Deep in development

We’re still deep in the development of Customizable Profile Fields. When they’re ready, you’ll be able to create profiles exactly the way you want. We’re also working on improving the current functions and adding new features.
