1.8.10 PeepSo Release

New Release: PeepSo 1.8.10

It’s my great pleasure to announce the immediate availability of PeepSo 1.8.10. The release was delayed for a couple of days which we communicated on our community. We found some issues and decided NOT to release until it’s fixed. Sorry for the delay but we wouldn’t be able to live with ourselves, if we just decided to release something we clearly knew was broken. Everything finally fell into place and I’m happy to be able to make this release. Read more

PeepSo 1.6.3 Is Out!

In the previous release we totally redid the notifications in PeepSo. We also did the Photo Albums, and those changes made us all very, very happy. So happy, in fact, that we decided to make more of them. In this release, we’ve brought a giant bag of brand-new and shiny!

All-New Notifications System

Just when you thought notifications couldn’t get better… we find a way! Not only are notifications more compact now but they also do more. Sure, they’ll take you to the view of the post, but if the notification is about a comment or a Like on a Comment, the page will also scroll to the comment itself. We’ll even flash a highlight there so that you just can’t miss it. See it in action:

Styling Improvements

Photo Albums are a great way to share photos and keep them organized but we wanted them to look even better. Nailed it! Here’s how they look now.

Registration Fields

Ever since we redesigned the profile fields in PeepSo and added the Extended Profiles plugin to our portfolio, we thought we should also include those extra fields on registration. It’s done.

There’s now a simple switch next to the fields in the Profiles configuration options. Check the switch and the field will appear on the registration form.

Profiles Settings - marked switch on separator and field for showing it in registration.

All the rules and settings are still kept and applied. So if you make a field compulsory on the profile, it will be compulsory on registration. All validation rules are applied too.

Frontned User Registration - clearly visible validation notices.

Other Improvements

File System Directory

Our support staff are often asked about an inability to upload photos. It could be a profile avatar or any photo on the stream but the solution is almost always the same: to make sure that the file system directory is writable.

To reduce those incidents, we’ve added a check that runs in the background when you visit the WP Dashboard or any other admin page. It will tell you if there is a problem with the file directory.

Nested Comments

Nested comments now follow the same rule as regular comments. If you set the number of comments to display to 3, for example, then both regular and nested comments will show the last three comments.

Comments will now always be visible, you won’t have to click “view replies” to see what was said, and you’ll never miss a reply on a nested comment.

Email Field In User Profile

We’ve added an email field to users’ profiles on the front end, enabling users to change their email addresses right from their profiles. The field and the workflow are dependent on WordPress behavior so all relevant email notifications about the change are sent out appropriately.

PeepSo 1.6.2 Is Out!

PeepSo 1.6.2 introduces another series of great features, improvements and bugfixes. Yeah, we’re on a roll here 🙂 Let’s start with the Core itself. There’s been a ton of changes.

PeepSo Core

Pinned Posts

Pinning a post to the top of the activity stream is a great way to send a clear message to everyone who visits. Just pick a post you’d like to pin to the top of the stream, and click the little arrow. It’s pinned!

Want to unpin it? Just click the little arrow again. It’s unpinned! You can only pin one post at a time, so if you pin a second post, the first one will return to its rightful place in the stream.

Bear in mind that privacy settings still apply to pinned posts. If you pin a post with a restricted privacy setting, it might not show to all users. (Don’t worry, we’ll let you know if you’re pinning a restricted post.)

Nested Comments

Most post comments are pretty clear but sometimes discussions can break off into two, three or more conversations. They can be hard to follow. Nested comments are one solution but creating a new column for every reply could have been even more confusing.

We’ve decided to use +1 level nested comments. Click ‘Reply’ and users will be able to comment on a comment, and keep different conversations separate.

Nested Comments.

If you’ve installed TagSo, one of our three free plugins for PeepSo, when a user hits Reply, the person they’re replying to is automatically mentioned. Everyone knows exactly who the comment was addressed to.

Revamped Notifications

Notifications are the heartbeat of every community. They addict users and drive them back to the community. Whenever users see that red number they have to click. We wrote a fascinating blog post about it.

We have great notifications in PeepSo but we wanted to make them even greater. We wanted them to just work. Always.

Previous notifications were divided into a series of links, each of which had to be clicked. Now it doesn’t matter where you click. Whether you hit the avatar, the shown links, or even a bit of empty space somewhere, you’ll always be taken directly to the content you’re being notified about.

Admin Account Verification Setting

Some admins have told us that they didn’t know what the “Enable Account Verification” setting meant. We had created a brief description but it looks like it wasn’t clear enough. We’ve made it better.

If there are any configuration options that you wonder about, that aren’t clear or you find confusing, do let us know. We’ll get it fixed! Just open a support ticket here.

Extensions Page

We felt that the list of plugins on the PeepSo dashboard looked a little cluttered. We’ve now decided to create a completely separate view. It not only works better, with options like hiding the plugins already installed, it offers an elegant search option as well.

The Extensions page is where you can find all the additional PeepSo plugins, both the official plugins created by our team and those created by third party developers, paid and free. As PeepSo grows you’ll notice new additions to the list.

PicSo

PeepSo 1.6.0 put three in-built Photo Albums in users’ profiles. Those albums were just the beginning of something we’ve wanted to do for a long time: Custom Photo Albums.

Now users can create their own albums.

Users can share photos of a special event. Group the pictures from their vacation. Create new albums, edit existing albums, add and remove photos, change captions, and more.

Whenever an album is created, a post on the activity stream is published automatically with the same privacy setting as the album. If the user adds more photos to the album, the post is updated and bumped to the top of the stream.

All comments are also synced with the album view so users see uniform content.

Other Features and Improvements

Revamped Stream Action Titles

It’s obvious when someone shares a post so we decided to cut it out completely. Less is more, right?

MoodSo and LocSo, our other two completely free PeepSo plugins, are no longer attached to the end of each post. They now render in an environment that’s much more natural.

Moods and Location now render in a more natural place.

We’ve also moved them around in the Messages and Chat views.

Location pin

You might have noticed that there’s no preposition next to the location. There were too many options and too many exceptions. So we went with a pin instead. It’s so much easier… and much more elegant.

BuddyPress to PeepSo Migration Tool 1.6.1 Is Out!

BuddyPress to PeepSo Migration Tool is a migrator plugin that moves your data from BuddyPress to PeepSo. It’s super-easy to use, and we’ve now added a ProfileSo plugin. You’ll be able to migrate custom profile fields and user profiles in their entirety.

Just install PeepSo and all of the plugins you want to use. Add the Migrator plugin, choose a couple of quick options and click the button. That’s it! The migrator will get to work moving over your data.

If you’ve wanted to give PeepSo a try but were afraid you’d lose your BuddyPress content, you’ve nothing to fear. We’ve got you covered.

Here’s a video that shows how the migrator works:

Steps:

  1. Make sure that BuddyPress is installed and working.
  2. Install PeepSo and any of the plugins you want to use in your community.
  3. Install and open the migrator.
  4. If ProfileSo is installed and you’re using the gender and birthday fields in your community, match those fields to the fields in BuddyPress. (The other fields in BuddyPress will also be moved but the gender and birthdate fields are available in PeepSo by default and have to be matched manually.)
  5. Click the ‘Start Migration’ button.
  6. Confirm that you want to migrate the data.
  7. Stroke the cat and plan world domination while your data flies into PeepSo.
  8. Done!

What Data Is Migrated?

Almost all the data you have in BuddyPress will migrate quickly to PeepSo:

  • Users
  • Uploaded user profile avatars
  • Uploaded user profile covers
  • Custom profile fields
  • User friends and friend requests
  • Relevant notifications that crossover to PeepSo
  • Messages
  • Posts
  • Comments

What Data Is Not Migrated?

Data for features that PeepSo does not currently support, such as groups, cannot be migrated. Once we add those features, we will add them to the migrator as well. For the migrator to move data such as user friends and messages, the FriendSo and MsgSo plugins must be installed with PeepSo. Similarly to migrate profile fields, including custom genders etc., you must have installed ProfileSo.

How Long Does The Migration Take?

The speed of the migration will depend on the amount of content in your BuddyPress community and the speed of the server. We tested it with a community of over 2,500 users and more than 15,000 activities. It took us about four min utes. A larger community with about 10,000 users and 60,000 activities can be migrated in about 11 minutes. That should be just enough time to make your cat purr. If you don’t have a cat, it’s enough time to make a cup of coffee… and look at cat pics on the Internet.

What If I Already Have Some Content In PeepSo?

The migrator will delete all your existing PeepSo content, so don’t use it if you have anything you’ll miss.

The BuddyPress Migrator is totally free and available from the backend of WordPress. Go to Plugins > Add New, and search for ‘PeepSo’.

Please note that the Migrator only moves the data within the same WordPress installation. You won’t be able to use it to migrate BuddyPress from http://sampledomain1.com to http://sampledomain2.com.
