PeepSo 1.4.1 Is Out!

PeepSo 1.4.1 focused on bugfixes and small improvements to PeepSo’s existing features. Some of the enhancements are strictly under-the-hood but others make PeepSo look—as well as behave—better than ever.

Dark Theme

We added a button in PeepSo config that switches PeepSo to Darth… Dark… DARK THEME. This is just the beginning of a long term plan for PeepSo to blend into various colored themes. If you wish to customize PeepSo’s CSS, I recommend reading this doc.

The beauty of it is that it’s really simple to set. All you need to do to get the dark theme is go to the backend of your WordPress site > PeepSo config > Appearance and change the theme from Light to Dark.

Email Notifications

Email notifications have a great impact on a community. We’ve improved the content of the notifications so that they’ll be even more effective and we’ve also created a beautiful new template that’s super-clean.

Beautiful and clean email notifications.

If you are upgrading PeepSo we can’t override your notifications settings so we added a Reset button. If you haven’t made any changes to the email notifications text you can update it now by clicking the button in the Settings.

Who’s Online?

This release introduces information about users currently online. The online status will be displayed right next to users’ names making contact fast and easy. It’s shown on users profiles:

It’s also shown on user listings like the members page.

PeepSo Core now uses ReCaptcha on the registration form. With your registration protected from all those spam bots, there’s no more need for a third party solution. You can easily configure ReCaptcha in PeepSo backend and it works brilliantly on registration.

Bugfixes and other small improvements

In addition to those changes, we also improved avatar quality; resized and compressed profile cover photos to enhance performance; and adjusted the cover photo vertically and horizontally depending on the used image ratio and many more. You can see the full changelog here.

We started a long term effort to speed up PeepSo as it grows. We implemented speed measuring routines in some of the under-the-hood logic to track down parts that run too slow. In the first wave of improvements we refactored some user search logic and shortened the average page load time by 5-10 seconds in a few worst case scenario websites with a large user base.

Upgrade PeepSo Now

Automatic updates let you move quickly to the latest version—and you can do it all in the backend of your site! Remember to update plugins in this sequence: ChatSo first, then all the other child plugins. Core PeepSo plugin should be updated last. Here’s documentation that explains how to upgrade.

PeepSo and ChatSo 1.4.0 Are Out!

As Abraham Lincoln said:

ChatSo is fantastic. I use it every day.

ChatSo is fantastic. I use it every day.

Well okay, he didn’t say that. But he definitely would have done. PeepSo with ChatSo is that good! It will totally change the way your users interact on your site.

ChatSo is based on MsgSo and requires that plugin to be installed and activated. Without MsgSo, ChatSo will not work.

ChatSo Is So Pretty!

Looks aren’t everything… but boy, are they important. ChatSo looks amazing. It’s clean. It’s neat. It just works. Whether you want just one chat window open or need a tidy stack of conversations for easy browsing, ChatSo keeps your screen clean and clutter-free.

Chatso design.

ChatSo Works Everywhere

With ChatSo, instant chat will be available on every page of your WordPress site. Users can chat while reading one of your blog posts—whether they have PeepSo view open or not. They’ll always be able to receive a message on your site and talk to a friend.

Chat, Break, Chat More

People will leave your site. They need to sleep, eat, bathroom breaks… but as soon as they come back to your site, they’ll find their chat windows exactly as they left them. Open windows will still be open; minimized windows will still be minimized.

ChatSo remembers where you left off.

Automatically Sync Chats Across Tabs and Browsers

Your users are likely to have multiple tabs open on their browser. Not a problem for ChatSo.

The chat windows sync continuously across tabs. Close a chat window in one browser tab, it closes in the other. Write in one, your message will display in all of them. Receive a message in one tab… you get the idea. Oh, and yes… it also syncs between browsers… neat, huh?

ChatSo syncing across tabs and browsers.

Mobile Messaging

MsgSo already works like chat so we’ll redirect users to the messages view on mobile devices. We don’t want to clutter the screen.

Moods, Photos, Location

You can see moods, photos and location tags in the chat view. Click the location, and you’ll see the map. Click a photo thumbnail and we’ll bring up the photo in a modal window.

While this version of ChatSo does not enable sending moods, location and photos, you can share them in the messages view and navigate to the full conversation view by clicking the ‘cog’ icon and selecting the full message view. We’ll add sending moods, location and photos in the next version of ChatSo.

Want Some Quiet Time? No Problem!

Users who want to browse your site alone can disable chat for a single conversation, just by clicking the cog icon on chat and  or turn it off completely using an option in their profile settings.

Changes to PeepSo Core

We have also made some improvements to PeepSo core. Like reorganising settings in the backend. As well ass adding the new setting for you to decide whether you want to use round or square avatars on your community.

PeepSo 1.3.0 Is Out!

In version 1.3.0, we focused on tweaking some of the features. These tweaks are important for future versions.

Groundwork Laid For One-Click Updates For All Plugins

We’ve started the process of preparing PeepSo for one-click updates. Instead of uninstalling then re-installing all the plugins, for future versions you’ll be able to just click the update link next to each plugin. Very simple.

This function will start working in the next version of PeepSo. This should be the last time you update manually. Please remember that this is still work in progress. It will look somewhat like this:

One click updates and upgrades for PeepSo and its plugins.

PeepSo’s Router Re-Written

Now that PeepSo has been out for a while, we have had reports of a few URLs and third party plugins not working well with PeepSo.

To improve the compatibility and stability of the plugins, we wrote the router. That should avoid issues with popular plugins like WPML which change the URL of the page by making additions like:
This improvement is strictly under the hood. The only change you’ll see is the construction of the URLs. That’s usually just the addition of a question mark.

This is how the profile link appears in PeepSo 1.2.1:

And this is how the link appears in PeepSo 1.3.0:

Three-State Friends Buttons

We also changed the behavior, look and feel of the action buttons on user profiles. Adding friends is now a three-state button with no modal confirmations needed. It’s all ajaxified too.

3-state friends buttons on user listings

Those action buttons have also been added to all user listings. You can see them on members pages, user profiles, and your friend list. The design is consistent to give users a feeling of confidence and to avoid confusion.

Styling Tweaks and More Changes To Profile Pages

We made a few minor changes to the profile pages:

  • Blocking users has been moved to a ‘cog’ icon.
  • Users can be banned from the front end by clicking the cog icon.
  • To save space, we replaced the “Send Message” button with an envelope icon.
  • We improved the look and feel of the modal window for sending messages.
  • Square avatars
  • Removed gray shadow stripe and added shadow for letters
Profile view after styling tweaks.

We’ve made sure that PeepSo styling is consistent. That’s why we went with square and sharp edges over rounded corners and round avatars. If you feel like all square is not your thing, feel free to check out our documentation on how to override PeepSo CSS.

Bug Fixes

In addition to those design and functionality tweaks, we also fixed a number of bugs. You can see the full changelog here.

What, No Chat Plugin?

The chat plugin is almost ready. It just needs a few design tweaks and some testing. It will be released next. Watch out for it!

Upgrade PeepSo Now

To update to Version 1.3.0 you’ll have to un-install and re-install all the plugins. Last time! Here’s the documentation on how to do it.

PeepSo 1.2.0 Has Native WordPress oEmbed Support

I know what you’re thinking: “Wow! Fantastic! Superb! Awesome! Fabulous… Huh?”

You were right the first time. oEmbed in PeepSo 1.2.0 is a way of presenting a link on a website. Instead of showing blue text and an underline, you get to show the actual content you want to share. So if you wanted to show your visitors a YouTube video, instead of telling them where to go, you embed the video itself.

YouTube embeded link.

You’ve seen this before. All the big names online— Spotify, InstagramTwitter—they all do it. It’s a fantastic way of presenting content.

oEmbed isn’t just pretty. It also helps with usability and it keeps people on your site. Instead of sending your users to YouTube, you can show them the video inline and keep them with you.

PeepSo now supports all of the embeds that WordPress natively supports. You can see the whole list here:

PeepSo 1.2.0

PeepSo 1.2.0 Is Out!

We’re proud to announce the release of PeepSo 1.2.0. This release focuses on Core PeepSo and MsgSo. We added a bunch of new features and improved others.

Core PeepSo Improvements

Members Page

PeepSo 1.1.0 introduced a Members Page that listed community members and included a search field. This version adds sorting and filters.

You can sort users by:

  • Alphabetical order
  • Recently online
  • Latest members

You can also select members by gender and only view users who have uploaded avatars. Combining filters means you could search for “female users with avatars who were recently online.” Cool, right? You could even filter further by adding a name and looking for “female users with avatars who were recently online and called ‘Jane.’”

We used Ajax to power the search which means there are no reloads and everything is superfast. Want to see how fast? Check this out.

Native WordPress oEmbeds in PeepSo

Paste a video link or Instagram link into a Web page and you immediately get a preview of the destination. It’s very cool… so we now do the same thing in Peepso. Paste a link and those oEmbeds (that’s what they’re called) will give your audience a preview. This is how it looks.

Cool, right?

MsgSo improvements

Ajax worked so well in Search that we decided to use it to improve Messages as well. Now there’s no need to reload a page when sending a message and when someone contacts you, you’ll receive both a notification and the message itself. It works exactly like a chat.

You can even see when someone is in the process of typing to you, so no more crossed messages or wondering whether you’re being ignored.

Messages indicate when someone’s typing.

We’ve added many more small improvements and fixes. You can read about all the major features of this release here. The full changelog will tell you everything we did. To see what we are planning next, check out our Roadmap here.

BuddyPress To PeepSo Migration Tool

PeepSo to Buddy Press Migration Tool

PeepSo to Buddy Press Migration Tool

One of the most frequently asked questions we’ve received since releasing PeepSo is whether we have an easy way to migrate BuddyPress to PeepSo.

Why, yes. Yes, we do!

PeepSo Migrate is a migrator plugin that will move your data from BuddyPress to PeepSo. It’s super-easy to use.

Just install the plugin, click the button, and watch the magic happen.

Note that the Migrator only moves the data within the same WordPress installation. So you can’t use it to migrate BuddyPress from to But you weren’t
planning to do that anyway, were you?

If you’ve wanted to give PeepSo a try but were afraid you’d lose your BuddyPress content, you’ve got nothing to worry about. We’ve got you covered.

Here’s a video that shows how the migrator works:

  1. Make sure that BuddyPress is installed and working.
  2. Install PeepSo and any supporting plugins you want.
  3. Install the Migrator.
  4. Open the Migrator.
  5. Click the ‘Start Migration’ button.
  6. Confirm that you want to migrate data.
  7. Stroke the cat while the data flies into PeepSo.
  8. Done!

Which Data Is Migrated?

  • Users
  • Uploaded user avatars
  • User friends
  • Notifications
  • Messages
  • Posts
  • Comments

What Data Is Not Migrated?

Data for features that PeepSo does not currently support, such as groups, cannot be migrated. Once we add those features, we will add them to the migrator as well. For the Migrator to move data such as User Friends and Messages, the FriendSo and MsgSo plugins must be installed with PeepSo.

How Long Does The Migration Take?

That depends on how much content you have on BuddyPress. We tested it with a community of over 2,500 users and more than 15,000 activities. It took us about four minutes. A larger community with about 1000 users and 60,000 activities can be migrated in about 11 minutes. That should be just enough time to make your cat purr. If you don’t have a cat, it’s enough time to make a cup of coffee.

What If I Already Have Some Content In Peepso?

The Migrator will delete all your existing PeepSo content, so don’t use it if you have anything you’ll miss.

The BuddyPress Migrator is totally free and available from the backend of WordPress. Go to Plugins > Add new and search for ‘PeepSo’.

Give it a try today and create an amazing community with PeepSo!
