New Plugin: Markdown

End of the year is upon us. It’d be nice to give you something before the end of the year. It’s a plugin that we have been looking forward ourselves too. We needed a way to easily and safely format text within our own community. So that we can answer questions and provide well formatted answers at the same time.

It does make a difference especially when you have to deal with code snippets or at least put emphasis on certain parts of your post or comment.

What is Markdown and why is the plugin named like that?

Markdown is a lightweight markup language with plain text formatting syntax. It is designed so that it can be converted to HTML and many other formats using a tool by the same name. Markdown is often used to format readme files, for writing messages in online discussion forums, and to create rich text using a plain text editor.

Wikipedia

Markdown is widely used across the web. It’s the cornerstone of quick, simple and safe text formatting. Markdown is extremely powerful, but we have decided that in the first version we’ll adapt just bits and pieces of it.

Where Can I Use It?

It can be used in both Posts and Comments throughout PeepSo. There are settings where you can allow Markdown in Posts and / or Comments. Just go to the backend of your site: PeepSo > Configuration > Markdown and flip the switches. There’s also a quick cheatsheet on available Markdown formatting.

How Can I Format Text?

Available Formatting

The available ways to format text are:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Duis feugiat tortor risus, vitae volutpat lacus volutpat a. Sed vitae sapien augue. Curabitur posuere nec felis eu pretium.
by using: **DoubleAsterisks**

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Duis feugiat tortor risus, vitae volutpat lacus volutpat a. Sed vitae sapien augue. Curabitur posuere nec felis eu pretium.
by using: *SingleAsterisk*

The above text formatting styles can be combined too. You can do what you want. 🙂

Lists

It comes also with the possibility of creating ordered lists

  1. Milk
  2. Bread
  3. Butter
  4. Cheese

Which can be created just by placing a number and a dot / full stop: 1. Milk 2. Bread 3. Butter

You can also create unordered lists

  • Milk
  • Bread
  • Butter
  • Cheese

Similarly to ordered lists you can just put a dash or an asterisk in front of a word. Like: – / *. Lists will then be created.

Code

You can also include inline code by putting `in front of a line of code and closing with the same symbol`.
